How it works
Adding VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). Removing VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). The tax amount is the difference between gross and net.
Example
€100 net at 21% VAT is €121 gross (€21 tax). €121 including 21% VAT is €100 net.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I just subtract 21% to remove VAT?
Because VAT is calculated on the net price. 21% of €121 is €25.41, which is too much; the correct tax is €21.
Which VAT rate should I use?
It depends on your country and the product. Common rates include 21% (Netherlands, Belgium), 19% (Germany) and 20% (UK, France).
Is this tax advice?
